Colour – Remove the Fear Factor

Is fear holding you back from choosing your favourite colour for the home? Do you recall the saying ‘fortune favours the brave’? Making a decision on colour can throw the strongest sailor overboard. Decorating your home should be fun and inspiring, yet the fear of choosing the wrong colour can paralyse people.
You can of course hire an interior decorator to assist you, however isn’t staring at paint samples, and envisioning your ideal room half the fun? What happened to enjoying the journey? If you are not too battle weary at this stage and still want the thrill of choosing your favourite colours, maybe these tips will help.

  • Visit your local paint shop or hardware store. There’s usually a sausage sizzle on as well so #winning. Make a beeline straight to the paint area, take a deep breath, count to 10, and just go for it. Remember, remove the fear of what others may think. Choose colours that you like, not ones that you think will work, and worry about how you can use them later.

  • Go through your favourite fashion magazines, and cut out images with colours you find attractive. Please don’t steal any from your doctor’s surgery unless they’re over 10 years old. There should be a few to choose from then right? Anyway, think about how the colours make you feel and start to envision what rooms may work with these particular colours.

  • You may have inspiration in your home already. Search your space to see if there are any existing colours being used that inspire you. This could be furniture, art, statues; just see what you have that can assist you with your decision making.

Keep in mind that whatever you decide, you don’t have to be stuck with it forever. Approach the decision with a playful attitude and sense of humour. The important thing is to just make a decision.
